A vote for health Modest tax increase will ensure needed programs; child service levy backed, too Oct. 19, 2009 The Record-Courier also endorses Issue 4, a renewal measure for Portage County Children's Services that is the only countywide issue on the ballot. Issue 4 provides funding for services such as parenting classes, drug/alcohol assessments, in-home therapeutic services, emergency family support and foster care as well as a 24-hour child abuse hotline. Last year, Children's Services received more than 3,600 calls reporting abuse, neglect or families in need of services. It provided alternative placements for more than 200 youth in need of safe, stable environments. Issue 4 is a 0.75-mill renewal levy that would generate about $1.6 million per year for 10 years. It costs the owner of a $100,000 home less than $15 per year in annual property taxes. A "Yes" vote on Issue 4 will not raise taxes. It will ensure continued funding for vital services for Portage County children. |
